The key of B flat, not a usual key for guitar, was chosen for its ability to combine full chords with open strings. The piece oscillates between the major and the minor, together with several implied modulations.
Written in St Margaret's Hope, Orkney Islands, where the haddock was poached just right and the fiddle competitions (not generally in B flat) were rife on a Saturday night.
