Thomas Morley b. 1557, d. 1603 aged 46. He was organist at St Paul`s Cathedral, London, and had the honour of becoming a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal. He was probably a friend of Shakespeare, for whose plays he composed certain songs. Queen Elizabeth I`s government gave him, from 1598 (after Byrd and Tallis), a monopoly of music printing. He wrote church music, instrumental music, lute songs, and some of the finest madrigals of the great madrigal period. These three madrigals have been arranged and compiled to suit the modern woodwind quintet. The third of them may have a little staccato introduced, at the discretion of the players. I have not marked this in the score, prefering to preserve an original appearance.
