Composed by John Goertzen. Contemporary. Score. 17 pages. John Goertzen #24913. Published by John Goertzen (A0.930249).

Premiered May 10, 2013 For His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales Denver, Colorado When I began this project. I felt obligated not only by my Welsh heritage(my mothers father), but also to all of the soldiers who never returned from the battlefield. These poets I honor in this cycle gave their lives and I felt that their words and feelings should live on, and live again, in another setting. That of music. And further than that, I wanted poetry from differing points of view. Edward Thomas (1878-1917) was eager to join the military at the beginning of the war despite being a newlywed and exempt from the draft His poems rarely referred to the war its self, even though he only began to write poems in 1915. Ellis Evans on the other hand was a staunch pacifist and his poem that I have included is entitled “War”, in Welsh “Rhyfel” is in quite contrast to his Bardic name ‘Hedd Wyn’, meaning ‘White Peace’. And the cycle ends with my own poem on rebirth. I hope this serves to extend the voices of those who never came back. Contents 1. Pa le mae Nghariad i? Traditional Welsh arr. John Goertzen 2. Touch of Rain. Edward Thomas 3. War Ellis Evans (Hedd Wyn) 4. The Dark Forest Edward Thomas 5. Mist on Oregon Pines John Goertzen.
