Composed by Shase Leland Hernandez. Contemporary. 5 pages. SLH Music #2027669. Published by SLH Music (A0.1009789).

When I read Whitman’s text I immediately observed a male-centricity to it. It was inevitably for this reason that I had originally decided to set it. In his poem I perceived the first few lines ("As Adam early in the morning walking forth from the bower refresh’d with sleep.") as an omniscient narrator. Following this, however, I feel that the voice of the poem switches to a more intimate first-person view. In my setting for soprano I wanted to allow the roles to be reversed and have the musical setting convey Eve's urging of Adam to, "…be not afraid." I have rather ironically introduced a hypocrisy to my original intention when I decided to have my friend Chris Ramos sing this piece. The objective of stripping away the male centered viewpoint was inevitably shifted back into Whitman’s original intent. As such, depending on who sings this piece the entire meaning, in my mind, changes.
