The New Universal Psalmodist, containing I. A New and Complete Introduction to Psalmody; or the Art of Singing Psalms, &c. Interspersed with many useful Scales and Examples, explained in the most familiar Method ever yet Published. To which is added, new, plain and concise Rules for Composition. II. The most valuable Collection of Psalm and Hymn Tunes, Canons and Anthems, many of which were never before printed; also the tunes, anthems, &c. sung at the Magdalen, Foundling, Lock, and other places of Worship, in and about London, with Words adapted to each Tune. The whole composed in a new and easy tatse for two, three, or four voices, in the most familiar Keys and Cliffs now used and recommended by the most eminent Masters: the whole calculate to promote and improve this most excellent part of social worship: and thereby render it both useful and delightful in Country Choirs: likewise, all congregations and other religious societies in Great Brittain, Ireland, and America.

HTI (Temperley): This is not an edition of WillAUP (The Universal Psalmodist), but is ‘upon an entire New Plan’. It may have been, in part, an attempt to combat Bayley’s pirated eds of WillAUP (TansWRM 3a, etc.; BaylDA 5, etc.; BaylDAHUP) in the American market. It is probably the first of ‘four large editions . . . sold in the space of four months’ according to a note in ed. 5 dated 7 September 1770. No intervening eds. have been found.
