JK.00986. The music for this pioneer anthem is based on the tune, "Greenville," which is also known as the hymn "Lord, Dismiss Us With Thy Blessing. " The organ is a must for the accompaniment because of several sustained notes in the pedals. Traditionally throughout Christendom, this hymn has represented the feelings of those called to preach the Gospel in other lands. The early members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had similar feelings as they left their homelands never to return again. Their sacrifice was great as they left behind their homes, their belongings, and in many instances, their loved ones in order to "come to Zion. " The choir sings the hymn in F major while the accompaniment is in d minor for the first 2 verses. The 3rd verse has the organ playing the melody while the choir sings a counter melody. The last verse is sung and played in a major key. Very effective.
