Program notes by the composer. Scènes de café, or "Scenes from the Café", takes its name as a parody of the Scène de ballet, Op. 100 of Charles Auguste de Beriot. The title as well as composition is also a reference to Paul Schoenfield's Café Music, for piano trio. The work began its early life as a chanson for voice and piano inspired by the book "A Year in the Merde" by Stephen Clarke. This humorous novel discusses the escapades of young British man working in Paris, his clash of cultures, and search for love. The composition was recently unearthed and thoroughly recomposed for Mme Bakkegard, for whom the definitive version is dedicated to. Scènes de café emulates my feelings and impressions of busy life in Paris, France. When you stroll down the Champs-Élysées or stop for an espresso, the air is filled with life and vitality. All around you people are going about their daily activities freely enjoying la vie en rose. Every person that you may meet has a different story to tell and every café that you may sit at has a completely different perspective. Scènes de café is broken up into four sections. Moderato con tristezza, Tempo di valse capriccioso, Meno mosso ma non troppo, and Tempo di tango appassionato. Each vignette tells a different story, a different perspective from a different set of characters. For the most part, it is up to the listener to paint their own individual narrative. My own attitude on the action follows something like this. The Moderato con tristezza recounts a person sitting all alone in a corner of a dimly lit café. it is early morning, and he or she is either feeling a sense of longing or regret. As the day progresses and hundreds of people walk through the streets of Paris, the Tempo di valse capriccioso encompasses their busy Bohemian lifestyle. As both the late afternoon approaches and the Meno mosso ma non troppo much of the action begins to wind down as many people take naps or relax in the sun. Perhaps even the corps de ballet has just been let out from the Opéra Garnier. Finally, as night falls, Paris transforms into La Ville-Lumière, the City of Lights. We are at the Moulin Rouge or another night club dancing sensually and hypnotically to the Tempo di tango appassionato until the sun rises in the morning and we repeat the whole process once more.
